CHAPTER 29

As I walked from the police station back to the car, I felt like my pace was a little livelier. I had seen the first ray of hope in several days; Rodney took my Mt. Carmel information seriously. The dash clock read 11:51; Roger and Agent Jawaski had taken up the morning.

Over the past few days, it had become a practice that when I needed a new direction, I called Jane. Today would be no exception, and I dialed her number.

“Good morning, Mrs. Fletcher.”

“Well, good morning to you, Mr. Wilson.”

“How has your morning been?”

“Normal routines. Mom is having a better morning. Your visit seemed to have perked her up. I admit it put a sparkle in my life, too.”

“That’s why I called. If you hear loud and strange noises across town, don’t be alarmed. It’s only my sounds of happiness. Oh, what a beautiful morning, Oh, what a beautiful day.”

“Thank you, David.”

“I know I still have my Jackie problem, but it’s not so difficult today. Even the drilling Rodney and his ISBI friends gave me this morning was a piece of cake.”

“What are your plans for today?” Jane asked.

“First I have to get back to reality. The clock is ticking. My Mt. Carmel info irritated the hell out of Rodney, but I think it gave him something to think about and may buy me some more free time.”

“Really. What did you find out?”

“I was able to run down information on the three names you gave me: Keith, Lionel, and Marvin. Keith runs a used car lot and is the host of a monthly card game. I suspect the car link is how Jackie got involved with them. The second guy, Lionel, he’s a banker. He was the only one to whom I actually talked. I told him I was ISBI Agent Adams and he gave me the background on all the other poker players. Before I could get back to Carmi, Rodney got word I was up there snooping around using Agent Adams’ name. Man was he mad.”

It suddenly dawned on me, “Jane, I can’t believe I didn’t tell you about this last night. However, we agreed to table the Jackie thing for the night and as it turned out, I’m thrilled we did.”

“Me too,” she said.

“Anyway, the name Marvin you gave me turned out to be a guy from Benton whose first name is actually Martin. Lionel didn’t know his last name. He said Martin was a semi regular who would sometimes go with Jackie to Mt. Carmel. Last Saturday night, all the regular players attended the poker game, except Jackie and Martin.”

“So they all have alibis,” she quickly surmised.

“Well at least all the Mt. Carmel guys. This Martin guy from Benton opens up some interesting possibilities. When I talked to Brumley this morning, he told me on the QT that Gravette may have covered up a police related situation Jackie had earlier this year in Benton. A lot of speculation but no facts. You know anything about a problem Jackie may have had in Benton?”

“No.
